Working at KCGM

What do you look for in potential employees?

How many people do you currently employ on site?

Around 1100 employees and contractors are onsite at any given time.

Does KCGM offer Fly In/Fly Out?

KCGM is a residential site, meaning that all our employees live locally. This is part of KCGM’s commitment to the growth and sustainability of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community and surrounding areas.

Does KCGM provide a uniform?

Yes. Uniforms and personal protective equipment are provided for all employees.

What opportunities are there for career advancement?

KCGM provides employees with opportunities to develop and grow within the organisation. We also offer relevant study assistance and training for employees wishing to advance their skills.

What will my roster be?

Different positions have various rosters and working conditions which vary depending on the role you applied for. These details will be discussed at interview stage.

What about Fitness for Work?

KCGM’s Fitness for Work Procedure ensures that everyone who enters the site is fit to do so, physically, emotionally and behaviourally. Among other things, the policy includes a system of causal and random drug and alcohol testing.

What can I expect to be paid?

KCGM offer competitive packages which include health allowance, quarterly bonuses, study assistance (if applicable) and salary packaging however remuneration varies according to the position and the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Applying for a job

How can I apply for a job at the Super Pit?

If you would like to find out more about joining the team at KCGM, a HR Representative will present an Information Session at 10am on the third Thursday of each month at Hannans North Tourist Mine. Hannans North Tourist Mine is located just off the Goldfields Highway, 1.5km from Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie.

Are the job postings online updated on frequent basis?

The job postings are maintained and updated regularly and new positions are posted regularly.

Can I apply for more than one job at a time?

You are more than welcome to apply for as many jobs as you like providing your skills match the job requirements.

Does KCGM have an age restriction for positions?

Unless you have applied for an Apprenticeship, you must be at least 18 years old before you can apply for a position with KCGM. It is a Mines Safety Regulation Act 1994 requirement.

Do I need to give KCGM a National Police Clearance?

As part of the recruitment process please note all candidates will be required to provide a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months).

I have applied for a job, what happens next?

Once you have submitted your application you will receive a confirmation email advising you that we have received your application. We will then review your skills and experience, and inform you if your application has been shortlisted.

Due to the large volume of applications we receive, only applicants who are shortlisted will be contacted.

The recruitment process will generally involve an interview in the first instance, followed by reference and pre-employment checks including a medical and a site visit depending on the position. The position you have applied for may require further assessments as part of the process. You will be advised at the time of the interview if this is a requirement.

Do I have to live locally to be considered for a job?

This depends on the type of position you apply for. To be considered for entry level positions such as Trainee Truck Driver, Utilities Technician or an Apprenticeship you must currently be permanently residing in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder or surrounding areas to be considered. Applicants must be able to provide proof of residency in Kalgoorlie – Boulder or surrounding areas for a minimum of six (6) months. This is to ensure that local residents are given the opportunity to work in the mining industry and it is one of the ways we support our local community.

For more specialised positions we will consider applicants who are not based in the Kalgoorlie- Boulder region however, if you are successful you will be required to relocate to Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Will I be offered a relocation package if I am successful in my application and I am moving to Kalgoorlie?

This depends on various factors and will be discussed at your interview. As a general guideline, KCGM usually offer relocation packages to semi professional and professional positions only.

I was unsuccessful this time around. Will KCGM keep my details on file?

We would like to retain your details on file so that we will be in a position to consider you for future KCGM opportunities.  If you do not wish for your application to be kept, please advise in writing.

Information for Non-local applicants

I don’t live in Kalgoorlie. Where can I find out about jobs and how can I apply?

Employment opportunities are available online. To be eligible to apply for Trainee Positions you MUST currently be permanently residing in the City of Kalgoorlie- Boulder. Applicants must be able to provide proof of residency in Kalgoorlie – Boulder for a minimum of six (6) months.

This is to ensure that local residents are given the opportunity to work in the mining industry and it one of the ways we support our local community.

In some cases, relocation will be considered for semi professional and professional positions however this at the discretion of KCGM.

Will I be successful if I move here to apply for a position with KCGM?

KCGM offers no guarantee that your application will be successful as applicants are considered against a number of factors.

Do you take applicants requiring a VISA sponsorship?

Applications of this nature are considered on a case by case basis against Department of Immigration guidelines and suitability for vacant positions.

Do you take applicants on a working VISA?

We accept student visa applications. All other visa applications will be assessed on a case by case basis.

I have an interstate license but not a WA one – can I still apply?

If you are successful for a position at KCGM, your interstate license must be transferred over to a Western Australian licence prior to commencing in the position.

Apprenticeships and Trainee Positions

Does KCGM take on Apprentices?

Yes. We offer the following Apprenticeships;

  • Boilermaker
  • Electrician
  • Auto Electrician
  • Fixed Plant Fitter
  • Mobile Plant Mechanic

We normally begin advertising in the second half of the year for positions which commence the following year.

I don’t have any mining experience. Do you have positions for people like me?

Yes. We offer several different trainee positions for people with little or no mining experience;

  • Trainee Process Technician
  • Trainee Laboratory Technician

  • Trainee Truck Driver – Open Pits
  • Trainee Truck Driver – Underground
  • Trainee Truck Driver – Crusher
  • Trainee Security and First Aid Officer

The positions are fixed term and, depending on your performance and our operational requirements, may lead to a permanent position with KCGM.

What qualifications do I need to apply for a trainee position?

For Truck Operator and Shotfirer positions you must hold at a minimum an unencumbered Western Australian Medium Ridged “MR” Driver’s License. For all other trainee positions, an unencumbered Western Australian “C” Class License is required.

Other assessment criteria for trainee positions include a positive attitude towards safety, and the ability to work and communicate effectively within a team, in line with KCGM’s Core Values.

I am currently doing my truck driving learner’s permit. Can I still apply?

Yes however your application will not progress until your full Medium Ridged “MR” license has been obtained.

Where do I get my truck license?

What gear truck license do I need to have?

It doesn’t matter which gear truck license you have, so long as it is at a minimum a MR License.

What is an unencumbered “C” Class License?

An unencumbered “C” Class License is a current manual driver’s licence with no restrictions or suspensions.

Why are only Fixed Term contracts available for trainee positions?

All trainee positions are employed on a Fixed Term contract as there are only a limited number of positions available. KCGM does not guarantee permanent placement at the conclusion of the trainee positions. Further employment is dependent on your performance and our operational requirements.

I have recently graduated or will graduate soon. Where can I apply?

What checks will KCGM do?

Once you have been interviewed for a position, the recruitment process will take approximately two to four weeks depending on the number of positions that KCGM is recruiting for and the type of the position for which you have applied.

Suitability and selection on a position is according to a range of pre-commencement checks. While you may complete one, some, or all of them, this in no way guarantees you a position with KCGM as the most suitable applicant is chosen for each role. Pre-commencements may include an interview, medicals, drug and alcohol testing, functional capacity testing and reference checks.

How can I find out about the status of my application?

If you have applied for a specific vacancy, only applicants who are shortlisted will be contacted. This can take up to two weeks.

If you have applied for a trainee position, we will only contact you should we wish to interview you due to the high influx of applications for these roles.
